On Leaving a legacy...
“Linking my family together with my parents’ planned gift to be used for the new Lower School construction and site plan tells a story about loyalty and the importance of leaving a legacy for generations of future students to enjoy.” ~ Ted Clay ’68
As part of a large clan whose multi-generational roots extend deep into the Springside School and Chestnut Hill Academy communities, the recent bequest of Julie and Ed Clay ’43 is both generous and in keeping with their family’s commitment to the schools.
Julie and Ed were active in the community. Ed served on Springside’s board from 1964 to 1974 and participated in several capital campaigns. Julie taught Kindergarten and 2nd grade in CHA’s Lower School for 12 years from 1963 to 1975.
During his self-proclaimed “second life,” Ed became an accomplished artist and art restorer. The touch of Ed’s hand is evident in the Henry Library, where he lent his talent to restore the prized Violet Oakley murals. The Oakley murals are now complemented by the recent renovation of the Henry Library.
With the support of their children, Edward Clay ’68, Phil Clay ’70, Julie Clay Pearson ’71, and Peter Clay ’75, Julie and Ed named the school the beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust. As a fitting tribute, a classroom will be named in honor of the Clays in the new Lower School building, which is slated to begin construction in 2018.
