Activities, Service, and After-School Extracurriculars

The mission of the Middle School activities program is to complement the core curriculum with learning opportunities that engage a student’s innate sense of play and fun. While some activities seek to spark students’ intellectual curiosity and inspire their creativity, others will teach them skills or introduce them to ideas that lie outside the required curriculum.

Participation in activities provides opportunities for students to practice emerging leadership and collaboration skills and to find their own unique voice within the community.

Activities

Students have an Activity Period once per 7-day cycle that complements our core curriculum. Students have the opportunity to participate in three different activities throughout the year. Some seek to spark students’ intellectual curiosity, others foster their creativity, and others engage their innate sense of play and fun.The offerings vary according to teacher/student interest and have included these favorites: Debate Club, Student Council, Cooking, Strategy Games, Jazz Appreciation, History of Rock and Roll, Rocketry, Student Teachers, Science Olympics, Wallyball, School Newspaper, Diversity Club, Yearbook, Coding, Conversational French, Eco Club, MathCounts Competition, Reading Olympics, Math Olympiad, Improvisational Theatre, Book Club, and Drawing from Nature.
After-School Extracurriculars

SCH offers after-school opportunities for students to explore their entrepreneurial, engineering, or dramatic interests through the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership’s Venture Incubator, FLL robotics, and drama (for 6th-8th grade).
Community and School Service

The Middle School has long believed in service to the local community. It is important that students know that there is a larger world beyond the confines of SCH Academy. The school has ongoing relationships with local organizations, including Friends of the Wissahickon, Keystone Hospice, Manor at Chestnut Hill, Weavers Way, Cradles to Crayons, and Wyck Gardens. Students build their sense of effectiveness and learn they are part of a larger community through opportunities to serve, both within and beyond the school.
