SCH Squash team mobilizes to help deliver squash (and food!) love

Within minutes after lobbing a text to parents of the Upper School varsity squash teams, SCH parent Tania Rorke (Abbie ‘20 and Grace ‘18) had mobilized 10 families to help deliver groceries to SquashSmarts families.  Over the years, many of our athletes have volunteered at SquashSmarts and have enjoyed competing against SquashSmarts players in local squash tournaments.

This effort all came together last Sunday afternoon.  Philly Family Covid Fund, brainchild of SCH parents Melissa Maddonni Haims and Josh Haims (Noa ‘21), was created in March to provide meals for our front line workers, those experiencing situational poverty or unemployment due to COVID 19, as well as the homeless and disadvantaged in Philadelphia by purchasing meals from, and supporting our local restaurants and caterers.

This past Monday,
Philly Family Covid Fund, in partnership with SquashSmarts, SCH Upper School Varsity Squash Teams, and the Union League Golf Club of Torresdale assembled and delivered bags heaping with food staples to 153 families affiliated with SquashSmarts - feeding 622 children and adults throughout West and North Philly. Rather than dropping off one cooked meal for each family, the Philly Family COVID Fund and SquashSmarts agreed that a bag of groceries would go much further.  It took a village to make this happen and without the involvement of the SCH Upper School varsity squash teams and their families, the home deliveries would have been impossible. They made this happen!

Steve Greg, Executive Director of SquashSmarts, wrote: ”SquashSmarts is truly humbled to have been the collective focus of everyone’s time, energy and love. It was an amazing team effort with a terrific Captain leading the vision. Thank you ALL so very much.”

Huge shout out the SCH Families who volunteered to help: Diana Giegerich, Steve Majewski (‘20), Janine, Christian (‘20), Celia (‘21) and Anna (‘23) Mazarelli; Liz, Maggie (‘20) and Lucy (‘22) Pearson; Tania and Grace (‘18) Rorke; Sarah (‘18) and Tommy (‘20) Scanlon; Hilary and Charlotte (‘21) Stahlecker; Ernie and Winslow (‘23) Tracy; Malcolm and Austin (‘20) Youngren, and  Dana Zimmer and Ava (‘22) Zimmer.
